Zebra Shades: Switch Between a Sheer View and Full Privacy on One Shade

Zebra shades (also called dual or banded shades) do something no single-layer shade can: with a small adjustment you shift from a clear, sheer view to complete privacy - on one shade. That versatility is why they have become one of the most popular modern window treatments we install.

How the dual-layer system works

A zebra shade is one continuous fabric with alternating sheer and solid horizontal bands, wrapped on a single roller. Roll it slightly and the sheer bands line up for an open, light-filled view; roll a little more and the solid bands overlap for full privacy and light block. It is all one motion on one zebra shade - no second shade needed.

Sheer view vs. full privacy, on demand

During the day you can keep the sheers aligned for soft daylight and an outward view while still cutting glare. In the evening, a small adjustment closes the solids for privacy. You get the airy feel of a sheer and the function of a privacy shade without committing to one or the other.

Who they suit best

Zebra shades shine in modern and transitional interiors, living rooms and kitchens that want a bright daytime view, and anyone who likes clean, contemporary lines. They come cordless and motorized, and in light-filtering to room-darkening fabrics.

Where they work

  • Living rooms and kitchens: daytime views, evening privacy.
  • Modern and transitional homes: the banded look reads current and clean.
  • Street-facing rooms: quick shift to full privacy when you want it.

Common Questions

Zebra shade questions.

What are zebra shades?

Zebra (dual or banded) shades are a single shade with alternating sheer and solid fabric bands that let you switch between an open view and full privacy in one motion.

Do zebra shades give full privacy at night?

Yes - align the solid bands and they close for privacy; note that sheer bands still let some light and silhouette through, so choose a room-darkening fabric where you want maximum block.

Can I get zebra shades motorized?

Yes - they're available cordless and motorized, and in a range of opacities.
